Freedom House, Kozlov Case File: Final Monitoring Report on the Trial of Vladimir Kozlov, Akzhanat Aminov, and Serik Sapargali, December 2012

  • The report is the product of monitoring of the trial of Kazakhstani opposition activists Vladimir Kozlov and Akzhanat Aminov and labor activist Serik Sapargali. The three men were accused of organizing and leading criminal groups that incited social hatred against the authorities in Kazakhstan among striking oil workers in Zhanaozen. Freedom House’s monitoring identified substantial and repeated violations of the defendants’ right to a fair trial in the proceedings.

  • Vladimir Kozlov, leader of the Alga! opposition group in Kazakhstan, was sentenced to seven and half years in prison for crimes supposedly related to his participation in a labor strike. Although officially an unregistered party, Alga! is considered to be the main opposition to autocratic Kazakhstani President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who has strictly controlled the government for the past twenty years.

Freedom House: Second Monitoring Report Documents Further Violations of Fair Trial in Kozlov Case, 11.09.2012

  • Freedom House is monitoring the trial of Kazakhstani opposition leader Vladimir Kozlov, who is being tried alongside activists Serik Sapargali and Akzhanat Aminov on charges of attempting to overthrow the government of Kazakhstan through agitation and organization of striking oil workers in the western city of Zhanaozen. This report covers the period from August 27-September 7, 2012. On August 21 the court unexpectedly announced a break in the proceedings from August 22-26.
