Astana, April 6 (IPS) – The President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, has claimed yet another landslide victory in the presidential election which was held last Sunday. Turbulence in the Arab world did not seem to have any significant impact on the distribution of power in Kazakhstan. Nazarbayev, who has been ruling the country for over 20 years, has confirmed his intention to “stay the course on economic, political and social reforms” in Kazakhstan.

On Monday the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, after British Prime Minister, David Cameron, had expressed his concerns over human rights abuses in this former Soviet republic state, announced that no one had the right to lecture his country.

On the 20th of November 2012 the Office of the Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan commenced its persecution of ‘Respublika’ and ‘Vzglyad’ newspapers, ‘K+’ TV channel and ‘Stan-TB’ website over the fact that these media outlets covered the violent dispersal of the oil workers’ demonstration in Zhanaozen in December 2011 and ensuing court trials.

In Kazakhstan a referendum has been planned to extend the mandate of the current president - in power since 1991 - to December 6, 2020, while at the same time cancelling the 2012 election.
